During the Pickathon kick off party, some key bands were announced that would be playing next year and a sneak peak of Portlandia Season 6 was presented. PORTLANDIA SPOILER ALERT: It was awesome! This Thursday January 21st Portlandia returns at 10P ET/PT on IFC. Season 6 Episode 1, features GuildWorks ~ Architecture of the Air via Pickathon. We have proudly been working with Pickathon for over 10 years now, and our signature shade fabric sail array would naturally be featured. We were proud of how much our work was shown throughout the episode, and especially during the credits. Don't miss the Portlandia season premiere on IFC. Pickathon 2015, is about to begin which means... Our largest installation of the year, the world's largest annually installed tension structure of its kind, is about to begin. The grand adventure of building the artistic shade fabric arrays at Pickathon started in 2005. It has definitely seen quite a few changes. Holding true to the intention of bringing musicians and fans together, the homegrown humble beginnings have evolved into an epic production. We find it's good to reflect on the past, while looking into the future. Let us share our Pickathon history with you. 2005 Our first installation for PICKATHON was in 2005. If you time travel to Pickathon in 2014, it's fair to say we have learned a lot through the years. 2006 The form of the iconic PICKATHON main stage started to take shape... what was to happen in the years to come is a design evolution. 2007 The stage and crowds began to grow. The event was changing into something big. It was also clear the attendees of Pickathon loved and wanted more shade and we were glad to provide! 2008 The provision of elegant shade improved the experience of attendees. It allowed them to stay longer to enjoy the event without overheating, thus increasing attendance and participation. The evidence is clear as you move forward with us in time. 2009 As we grew the main stage canopy, reaching towards the tree line, we also began enhancing the backstage areas for artists and staff. The overall production was growing, this images truly shows a hint of things to come. 2010 Larger panels were added above the crowd and over the stage, allowing for two large stages side by side. By adding a larger second main stage, the artist lineup was able to double. Comparing the overview images from 2009 (left) to 2010 (right) you will see how we increased the size of multiple panels above the audience, extended coverage for artists on stage and added more shade backstage accounting for more artists due to the increased lineup. 2011 In 2006 a wheel was set in motion which has carried forward. Here you will notice the overall geometry in the sky started to become bolder and more precise, while simultaneously remain organically fluid. 2012 The main array continued to grow, with improved rain coverage for both main stages, as well as increased shade for the audience. Pictured Left, GuildWorks added the Metatron, a colorful multi-layered array to provide much needed shade within the vendor/food area. This same piece was also used at Sacred Spaces Village at Burningman 2014. With the attendance building, it was clear new areas would have to emerge to provide engaging spaces. Here we see the playful kids area during the day, as night falls... lights transform this space into a cool bar area thus providing more entertainment to the ever-growing crowd of excited music fans that come to Pickathon year after year. 2013 We created a design evolution to the canopy above the audience at the main stage. This dramatic shift came about as a way of improving the installation process, improving long term sustainability and offering the growth that we helped establish. 2014 While we did not see major changes in the fabric infrastructure at the main stage between 2013 and 2014, we presented multiple shade structure improvements all around the property to improve the experience of the audience, the artists, and the staff. 2015 This year we are increasing the coverage of the main array to extend out to the vendor area. We are also exploring other variables and improvements throughout the property. We hope you have your tickets because it's already sold out. We highly encourage you to get tickets early, this spectacular event sells out quickly every year. If you love our work, if you love working hard, if you love being outdoors, and you love music and want to attend... sign up to volunteer and request to be a part of Sky Crew. We select a few to join us on the field and in the sky to bring this sea of fabric to life. Special thanks to: Pendarvis Farm, the entire Pickathon staff, loyal patrons, new attendees, sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and of course everyone at GuildWorks that has dedicated so much energy to bringing a humble vision in 2005 to what will undoubtedly be another magnificent presentation in 2015. It's amazing what can be accomplished in 10 years. Where? Pendarvis Farm (20 minutes form downtown Portland Oregon) in Happy Valley. Tickets and Info: http://www.pickathon.com Summer is here in Portland and that means plenty of sunshine and outdoor music festivals. While we design and build many different stage and shade canopies for different events. One stands out! We're proud to announce that we are going out to Pendarvis Farms to start building Pickathon today! This is a much anticipated event because it absorbs so much of our energy and dedication throughout the year. As you can imagine, considering the fact that Pickathon features one of our largest tension structures to date represented by 260,000 sq. feet of fabric, 10 miles of rope and line, over 1000' of stage truss, and a crew that works around the clock for months to design, fabricate, build, and install on site. Making it the largest temporary tension structures in the world setup annually that we are aware of. . Check out this video about part of our Pickathon Installation from 2012 produced by David Wild. GUILDWORKS R5A from David Wild on Vimeo. Pickathon 2012 is just days away folks! We are excited and in full on production mode, indeed, our crew essentially will be installing and helping in coordinating these grounds from sunrise 'till sunset, right up until Thursday so that by Friday we'll be ready for doors. This installation requires over 175,000 square feet of architectural fabric that has all been specifically designed for this event! This installation is truly a complex and sometimes mind bogglingly intricate dance of fabrics, ropes, and lots and lots of knots. We have 8, 50ft Boom lifts to help us navigate the grounds and get to the heights needed to tie off these fabric pieces high up in the air. It has been incredible to be out here and see what actually goes into all of this production. The field, where we have been primarily focused on up to this point is only one of the many places we add our architectural fabric structures. We also have installed several large bamboo structures throughout the grounds and those will also have fabrics tensioned off of them as well. The magnitude and complexity of this project is absolutely amazing, we are now 6 days away from the beginning of this festival and to think that all that is here and installed (and will be installed over these last 6 days) wasn't here a mere two weeks ago is incredible. Thank you for visiting and seeing where we're at with this glorious installation, please check back over the next several days leading up to Pickathon 2012 for more pictures, time-lapse videos, and more!
