Pickathon just posted a fresh video today shedding some light on what is the darkest night of the year. This is episode three from season one of their new Design Series featuring our very own Mar Ricketts, the main brains behind this magnificent iconic fabric installation. Check it out!
Philippe Glade has been documenting the extraordinary architecture and temporary structures of Burning Man for the past 20 years. In his latest work, Black Rock City, NV The New Ephemeral Architecture of Burning Man you are given 144 pages with 200 beautiful color images of Philippe Glade's exceptional photography. His efforts in this compilation lead to him winning an American Graphic Design Award 2017 from the magazine Graphic Design USA in its 54th year presenting these awards. The book offers a look at installations, including Sacred Spaces Village created by Guildworks, from the last 5 years of Burning Man. There remains approximately 850 books still available and they can be purchased up to December 15th at realpaperbooks.com through Glade's "Whatever Day Promo" (which is a pretty funny take on Black Friday/CyberMonday and all that nonsense). For a mere $37 (plus free shipping) you can own a copy of this special book and Glade has decided that at the end of the year, whatever books remain will be terminated (Baker Beach style). It was endearing reading Glade's thoughts on the creation of the book from his perspective when he noted that:
"2 years were spent on Research / Writing / Editing / Design and Layout (which paid off with a 2017 Graphic Design Award) / Production and Problem Solving / The result was a burner worthy book with a tactile cloth cover and blind embossing, packed with info, data, tips and, most of all, a very large visual spectrum of our vernacular architecture." Guidworks has the honor of being showcased in the book and the pictures taken are from the 2nd year in a row that we were awarded the Golden Rebar Award For Best Camp (2012 & 2013). Guildworks has been a part of the Burning Man community for several years now and it has always been a pleasure to see Philippe Glade and his ambitious blog This Is Black Rock City appreciate our presence on the playa over the years. This new book is going to be a wonderful keepsake that will only be available for 10 more days. At $37 with FREE shipping I don't know how you can afford not to order a copy...
You might be starting to think, "We have a Spring or Summer festival, we need some shade!" We are glad you found us! We are glad you are inspired by our work to reach out! We want to help you.
It's important to notice, we are not a tent company. We are a custom fabric architecture company that specializes in custom tensile membrane structures. While we do have some inventory from past events, we specialize in custom configurations and custom design solutions. Because we provide custom, artistic, highly creative works of art our process takes time to develop and provide a solution that fits your needs. Depending on the purpose of your shade structure, your timeline may vary. However we often recommend talking with at least 3 months ahead for small to medium size projects and 6 months ahead for larger more complex projects. Permanent and commercial projects may even require additional lead time. While exceptions can be made and we may have a window of opportunity, these windows become more and more narrow throughout the Spring and Summer months. So when is the right time to call us? Many people start thinking about shade protection in the Spring and especially in the Summer when the sun is already starting to beat down on you. However the ideal time to start talking with us about your project is in the Fall and Winter prior to your installation. You may wonder, why? Well... it's simple really. Quality custom work takes time and that is what we specialize in so the more lead time we are given the higher quality the work may be. In the spring and summer we are often already focused on the ongoing projects, events that booked with us last Fall or Winter. While we have several predesignated structures in our inventory, and a ton of fabric we could install, it still takes time to understand your event space, and to work through conceptual designs with you and to work through the engineering. All this takes time, the more lead time you can give us, the better our chances of supporting your event. If you are wanting to have shade for a Spring and Summer event, you most likely should have been talking with us and already booked your event the previous Fall or Winter. So now is the perfect time to start booking your events with us. T Keep in mind, that we make exceptions when the opportunity is still open to work with you but realize your chances will better the more lead time you can give us so we encourage calling us 6 months prior to your event, and booking your event within 3-6 months will assure availability and typically better pricing too by avoiding rush fees and overtime rates. We are always glad to hear from new clients and constantly building new relationships while maintaining several reoccurring clients such as Portland Business Alliance, Beloved, Bluesfest, Pickathon, Digital Dreams, and many others. We thank you for your continued interest and support. LIMITED EDITION SYNERGY ZERO WIND GREAT DECAS NOW AVAILABLE. " Beautiful, mesmerizing, and so relaxing to watch... the constant movement provides an ever changing art piece in our home." ~ Satisfied customer When we arrived at the Squaw Valley Creek Resort in September 2016, nestled into the famous Olympic Valley - just minutes from Lake Tahoe in California, we were awestruck. Welcomed by beautiful blue skies, epic mountain landscapes, and approximately 10 million ground nesting yellow jackets swarming all over the specific hillside we were to build. The yellow jackets especially liked us once we started hammering construction spikes and tent stakes in the grounds they call home. Luckily the catastrophe of yellow jackets was soon forgotten replaced by spectacular beauty of this valley and 3 weeks of outstanding weather. This was one of our most complicated temporary installations on record outside of Pickathon. We were up for the challenge though. This was not an "easy" task considering every point in the system was unique, and the grounds were entirely uneven, and we were given a narrow window to pass engineering and inspection to meet strict California standards. Thanks to the diligence of our design team, our engineers and the perseverance of our onsite installation crew, this installation marks a milestone success. The transformation of this natural setting is astounding and we hope you enjoy the photos below. We're proud to share this fascinating display. 2016 Annual Meeting May 2, 2016 presented by U.S. Bank GuildWorks has several long standing clients. Over the summer of 2015, during the 16th Annual Pickathon Music Festival... Portlandia, the IFC comedy show, filmed the 1st Episode of Season 6. Last night here in Portland, we were very lucky to join fans at the Revolution Hall, for the 2016 PICKATHON KICK OFF PARTY. During the Pickathon kick off party, some key bands were announced that would be playing next year and a sneak peak of Portlandia Season 6 was presented. PORTLANDIA SPOILER ALERT: It was awesome! This Thursday January 21st Portlandia returns at 10P ET/PT on IFC. Season 6 Episode 1, features GuildWorks ~ Architecture of the Air via Pickathon. We have proudly been working with Pickathon for over 10 years now, and our signature shade fabric sail array would naturally be featured. We were proud of how much our work was shown throughout the episode, and especially during the credits. Don't miss the Portlandia season premiere on IFC. We had a very interesting 2015, and we are actively working on projects that will launch in 2016. We'd like to take a moment to recap some of the highlights of our 2015 installations. In the beginning of the year, we were contacted by The Caravan ~ Tiny House Hotel, as featured on the TV comedy, Portlandia. This unique hotel is the first of it's kind and based here in Portland Oregon. They were interested in a removable custom rain canopy to allow for Tiny House moving. The result is a canopy we call the Flying Squirrel that provides year-round rain protection and can withstand high winds. Around that same time, we sent one of our experienced kite flyers Kelly "Sky" Reed to Montreal to meet with Cirque Du Soleil. He gave them a demo, and a taught several of their top performers fly one of our most famous kites, the Synergy Zero Wind Great Deca. The show Toruk ~ The First Filght will go live later in 2015, showcasing several customized versions of our specialty indoor zero wind kite. We're very proud to have had this opportunity to share our love of kite flying with a performance troop that has provided so much inspiration to our own team.
As summer began, a small crew including the founder of GuildWorks, traveled to Corfu Greece to install one of our most interesting permanent installations for a very special Eco Resort. This permanent installation provides rain protection and will withstand fierce Mediterranean winds. Soon it was July and we started building the world largest annually installed temporary shade fabric structure of its kind, taking an unprecedented 3 weeks to install, for Pickathon. This is a must attend event! Itis one of our longest running festival clients and always so much fun.
As summer began to wane, Cisco Live 2015 presented their Customer Appreciation, giving GuildWorks an opportunity to push the boundaries of functional tension fabric artistry. Our designers presented one of the most sophisticated temporary fabric tension structures we have ever installed. We call it the Honeycomb VIP Lounge. Each tower is weighted down and pulled into tension by a grid of ropes high in the sky which are connected to the Petco Park infrastructure hundreds of feet away. In July, GuildWorks was found in Canada presenting two innovative multi-dimensional structures. The Alien Shade Tree and the Alien Beacon, both of these were custom designed for Digital Dreams 2015 in Toronto. In September a dedicated GuildWorks installation crew took on the challenge of bringing to life a very intriguing stage, for the 10th Anniversary of Symbiosis.
We installed many other events throughout the year and wish we could share all of them. Stay tuned to see what else we have in store for 2016! We are already actively working on some very interesting permanent installations, and we look forward to an outstanding new year. We wish you all the very best land thank you for your continued interest and support. We appreciate when you share to share our work with your friends, and family and let others know what we offer. Happy 2016!
